Science Circus

3rd and 4th grade Downey students flooded the hallways with great anticipation of participating in a Science Circus earlier this month.

Led by their Professor, Ariela Vader, 43 Messiah Junior Early Childhood and Middle Level majors spent the day leading excited Downey students through highly engaging science experiments that lined the halls and the their Science Lab. The science labs took students through the following major themes of: Animal Life Cycles, Plant Life Cycles, Water & Weather, Producers. Consumers & Decomposers, and Plants & Animals.

As I walked through the halls watching students engage in these creative and highly interactive experiments and lessons. It was extremely powerful to see such an amazing collaboration between Messiah College and Downey Elementary. This Science Circus day took 43 College Students, 7 Teachers and 150 Downey students to come together for success.

Students used shaving cream and food coloring to make rain clouds

Collaborations such as this one between Elementary Schools and Colleges are extremely helpful in building the capacity within schools for 21st century skills and the creation of STEAM pathways. One of the ways the Foundry is working to build capacity within schools is by facilitating community engagement and partnerships.
