Spring Is In The Air
Spring is in the air! You know what that means? Flowers. Flowers. Flowers!!! Downey students in Ms. Hanford's Special Education class have been studying living vs nonliving organisms, survival condition of plants, the anatomy of flowers along with the role of the different flower parts.
Ms. Hanford's class spent 3 weeks studying plants with an emphasis on flowers before they ended with a special paint activity. These 12 exciting students participated in a paint party with a special guest...myself, Foundry Fellow | Nicole Pertillar. I walked the students step by step through painting a flower. As I painted, Ms. Hanford emphasized the vocabulary students had been learning for the previous 3 weeks.
Here are some photos of their stellar flowers!
It is always a bonus when you can add an activity like this one onto the end of science projects. It helps to reinforce the learning that has occurred.
We look forward to developing gardening projects and programming in a more extensive way in order to better utilize the beautiful greenhouse area on school grounds. We believe utilizing the greenhouse is a way to develop not only science projects but also math, technology, engineering and the arts. We are highly anticipating the many possibilities for excellent projects and programming surrounding The Downey Greenhouse.
